Rice protein is taken by mouth for muscle strength and muscle soreness. It is also used in infant formulas for babies who are allergic to cow's milk. Rice protein is used in skin and hair products. Rice protein powder (both white and brown) is made by grinding up rice and adding an enzyme to it which separates out the starch (a carbohydrate) from the protein. This protein is then used as a dietary supplement, and most often, is mixed with pea protein powder to establish a superior amino acid profile. This will also come into play when talking about rice protein, so keep it in mind. 20-40 grams of protein per day, which is 1 to 2 scoops of protein powder, is a good amount of protein for most people. The upper limit is about 3-4 scoops (80 grams), but of course, this depends on the individual and their goals.
Rice protein contains all essential amino acids but is not considered a complete protein.
Though research is limited, one 8-week study found that rice protein and whey protein were similarly effective at improving body composition and performance when paired with resistance training.
Rice protein made from sprouted whole grain brown rice offers many vitamins, folate, fiber, and amino acids.
Furthermore, it also provides a wide range of antioxidants that protects the integrity of your body's cells from being damaged by reactive oxygen species and free radicals.
You can mix rice protein in your morning yogurt, in different types of dairy products or plant-based drinks, blended into smoothies, used in pastries, or drunk as a protein drink after exercise.
